A couple weekends back our team kicked off the summer with an old fashioned yard sale here at our Plattsburgh office. All proceeds from the sale directly benefited The Third Age Adult Day Center and were organized by Ellen’s Rebellion, a team that will take part in this year’s local Alzheimer’s walk. The namesake of the group, Ellen, is the mother of employee Sarah Cronk-Duquette, who arranged the event. Sarah’s mother was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia in 2011. In the years following the diagnosis Ellen’s Rebellion has raised $53k for the cause. This year marks Northern’s inaugural yard sale with plans for future contributions to Ellen’s Rebellion.
Sarah called the sale a ‘smashing success’ with $750 raised for this excellent local service. “The great thing about this event is that people end up paying for their items and then donate money on top of it. They know it’s going towards a good cause,” Sarah added.
Seven employees, including myself, volunteered their time that Saturday to help set up, take down, and initiate sales. An incentive to participate involves Northern’s handling of service hours, which can be ‘traded in’ for work hours the following week. I took off early the following Friday, for example. This perk is just one of many reasons why Northern was named one of the best places to work in New York State in 2017.
This is an ongoing series meant to highlight Northern’s commitment to volunteer service in the North Country.
